DNS Lookup

Look up DNS records for any domain, including A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME and SOA records.

Try an example:

What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup retrieves records published in the Domain Name System for a domain name. DNS translates human-readable names into technical information used by browsers, mail servers and other internet services.

Different DNS record types serve different purposes. A and AAAA records point to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, MX records identify mail servers, NS records identify authoritative nameservers, TXT records carry text-based policies and verification data, while CNAME and SOA records describe aliases and zone configuration.

How to use DNS Lookup

  1. Enter a domain name without a URL path.
  2. Run the DNS lookup.
  3. Review the returned A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME and SOA records together with their TTL values.

Understanding DNS lookup results

A and AAAA records identify IP addresses used by a hostname. MX records control where domain email is delivered, while NS records indicate which nameservers are authoritative for the DNS zone.

TTL values tell DNS resolvers how long a record may be cached before it should be queried again. DNS data can change over time, so the results represent records visible to the resolver at the moment of the lookup.

Common uses for DNS lookup

  • Check where a domain currently resolves.
  • Verify mail and nameserver configuration.
  • Inspect TXT records used for SPF, verification and other policies.
  • Troubleshoot DNS changes or missing records.
  • Compare DNS information before and after a configuration update.
