What is a WHOIS and RDAP lookup?

A WHOIS lookup provides registration information associated with a domain name. Modern domain data is increasingly delivered through RDAP, a structured protocol that can provide registrar, registration date, expiration date, nameserver, status and DNSSEC information.

The amount of registrant information visible publicly varies by registry, registrar and privacy policy. Personal contact details are often redacted, but technical and lifecycle information about a domain can still be useful for administration and investigation.

How to use the WHOIS Lookup tool

  1. Enter a registered domain name without a path or URL scheme.
  2. Run the WHOIS/RDAP lookup.
  3. Review registrar, registration dates, nameservers, status codes and DNSSEC information.

What WHOIS and RDAP results mean

The registrar is the company through which the domain is registered. Registration and expiration dates describe the domain lifecycle, while nameservers indicate which DNS infrastructure is authoritative for the domain.

Domain status values such as transfer or update restrictions are registry-level states that can protect or limit changes to a domain. DNSSEC information indicates whether the registry reports cryptographic DNS delegation data for the domain.

Common uses for WHOIS lookup

  • Check when a domain was registered or is scheduled to expire.
  • Identify the registrar responsible for a domain.
  • Find the authoritative nameservers used by a domain.
  • Review registry status codes during transfer or DNS troubleshooting.
  • Compare registration information with DNS and hosting data.
