IPv6 Connectivity

Testing...

What is an IPv6 connectivity test?

An IPv6 test checks whether your current internet connection can communicate using Internet Protocol version 6. IPv6 was introduced to provide a vastly larger address space than IPv4 and is increasingly used by internet providers, mobile networks and modern online services.

A device may have an IPv6 address without every application or network path using it successfully. For that reason, WhatAnIP checks the connection detected for the page and also attempts a browser connection to an IPv6-only endpoint.

How the IPv6 test works

  1. Open the IPv6 Test page using the connection you want to check.
  2. Review the IP version and network information detected by the server.
  3. Wait for the browser connectivity check to report whether the IPv6-only endpoint can be reached.

Understanding your IPv6 test result

If IPv6 is detected, your connection has successfully used IPv6 for at least part of the test. The displayed ISP and ASN provide context about the network supplying the address.

If IPv6 is not detected, your device may be using only IPv4, IPv6 may be disabled, or a router, VPN, firewall or ISP configuration may be preventing IPv6 connectivity. An IPv4-only result does not necessarily indicate a fault because many networks still operate without native IPv6.

When an IPv6 test is useful

  • Verify whether a new internet connection supports IPv6.
  • Check IPv6 after changing router or firewall settings.
  • Compare connectivity with and without a VPN.
  • Troubleshoot services that behave differently over IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Confirm the IP protocol currently visible to websites.
